Sanctuaire de Notre-Dame des Larmes, Catholic shrine in Pointe-Noire, Guadeloupe
Sanctuaire de Notre-Dame des Larmes is a stone chapel located at the junction of two rivers, the Petite Plaine and l'Îlet, surrounded by tropical plants at 117 meters elevation. The structure contains two altar niches and sits within dense forest vegetation that slopes down to the water below.
This chapel was established following reported visions of the Virgin Mary on May 9 and June 3 in 1977. The sightings transformed the location into a pilgrimage destination that continues to draw visitors.
Two niches in the chapel display different representations of the Virgin Mary: one standing with hands clasped and another in prayer position. These images shape how visitors experience their spiritual devotion today.
To reach the chapel, turn left at the Maison du Bois and follow Route des Plaines past the aquaculture park. The path involves some walking through wooded areas and the trail can be muddy after rain, so wear suitable footwear.
The stone chapel features an inscription promising that those who visit with faith will receive divine blessings and witness miracles. This message remains central to pilgrims' spiritual motivation for coming.
