Savill Building, Modern visitor center in Windsor Great Park, England
The Savill Building is a modern visitor center in Windsor Great Park with a distinctive curved timber roof made from interlocking wooden laths. The structure houses exhibition areas, a shop, a restaurant with outdoor seating, and connects directly to the adjacent Savill Garden.
This building opened in 2006 following storm damage to the forest area in 1987 that destroyed much of the surrounding plantations. Its construction represented a new chapter for the park and its development as a visitor destination.
The structure integrates a timber gridshell system, incorporating materials from 400 larch trees sourced from local Crown Estate plantations in Windsor Forest.
The center is easy to reach and offers parking along with clear signage directing visitors to the garden areas. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since exploring the grounds involves walking through garden paths.
The building was constructed using timber from around 400 larch trees sourced from local forestry areas, creating a direct link between the structure and its surroundings. This material choice reflects an intentional connection between the building and the woodland setting.
