The stone structure of Soutra Aisle stands on a high hill, representing the last visible component of a former medieval hospital complex.
King Malcolm IV established the House of the Holy Trinity at Soutra in 1160, which operated as one of Scotland's three main hospitals until the 1460s.
Archaeological excavations at Soutra Aisle revealed evidence of medieval medical practices, including the use of hemlock and opium poppy for surgical procedures.
Visitors can access the site through a dedicated parking area along the B6368 road, located one mile from the intersection with the A68.
The medieval hospital's cellar contained remnants of medicinal mixtures that indicated trade connections extending to East Africa through ingredients like cloves.
