St John the Evangelist's Church, Burgess Hill, Gothic Revival church in Burgess Hill, England
St John the Evangelist's Church is a Gothic Revival building made of red brick with yellow and black detailing, crowned by a tall tower that houses a clock from 1887. Inside, columns divide the space, and stained glass windows by Mayer & Co show Christ as Consoler with Saint Thomas.
Architect Thomas Talbot Bury designed this church, which opened in June 1863 as the first Church of England building in Burgess Hill. It was later listed as Grade II*, recognizing its special architectural value.
The church serves as a gathering place where people from the local community come together for worship and to mark important moments in their lives. It holds a significant place in how residents connect with one another.
Services are held regularly, with two Sunday morning events and one on Wednesday that welcome visitors. The churchyard is open to explore and provides a peaceful space for reflection and observation.
The churchyard holds the grave of Annie Mackintosh, a notable figure in the town's story. A memorial for her son Aeneas marks the loss of someone who vanished during a 1916 Antarctic expedition.
