Braichgoch Slate Mine

Braichgoch Slate Mine is a slate quarry in Corris Uchaf featuring extensive underground chambers linked by a network of tramways. The site displays traditional Welsh mining methods, with preserved machinery and tools still visible throughout the interior spaces.

The quarry was founded in 1787 by David Williams through a lease from the Vane Estate and operated for nearly two centuries. It closed in 1970 as mining activity in the region gradually declined.

The mine employed over 350 workers during its peak in the 1890s, forming the economic backbone of the Corris community.

The underground chambers are accessible through guided tours, allowing visitors to explore the site and see preserved equipment. It is best to bring suitable footwear and a jacket, as temperatures remain consistently cool underground.

Beyond roofing tiles, the mine also produced specialized black electrical switchboards, demonstrating its manufacturing versatility. This diversification helped the quarry remain competitive during periods of fluctuating slate demand.
