Capel Lligwy, Medieval church ruins in Moelfre, Wales
Capel Lligwy is a ruined chapel standing on a hillside above Lligwy Bay with some original interior walls and gable structures still visible. The building displays different construction phases that developed over several centuries.
The chapel came into being in the early 1100s, following the end of Viking attacks in the region, and underwent major rebuilding and additions later on. Over time it lost its original use and eventually fell into ruin.
The place remains quiet today, drawing only visitors who take time to explore the ruins closely. The walls tell of its long history as a religious center for the local community.
The site is openly accessible on foot from the nearby road, and sturdy footwear is recommended because of the uneven ground. The best time to visit is in daylight when the structures and details of the walls are easiest to see.
A musician recorded an album inside the burial vault beneath the southern chapel in 1999, creating an unusual connection between ancient history and modern creativity. This surprising use shows how old places can still inspire new artistic work.
