Stopford Building

The Stopford Building is a concrete structure on Oxford Road in Manchester housing six lecture theaters dedicated to medical education and research. The facility also contains the Stopford Library, offering extensive resources and study spaces for medical students and scientists.

Built between 1969 and 1972 by H. S. Fairhurst & Son, it was Europe's largest medical facility when completed. This construction marked a major expansion of medical research infrastructure in Britain.

The building takes its name from Lord Stopford, a prominent anatomist and former Vice-Chancellor whose work shaped medical education at the university. His legacy remains connected to the institution through this designation.

Access to the building and its facilities is primarily for university members, so inquire at the entrance about visitor conditions. The Stopford Library provides a good way to experience the architecture and academic environment if access is granted.

Since opening, it has trained more physicians than any other institution in Britain. This record makes it a quiet anchor of British medical tradition, though few visitors recognize this.
