Medway megaliths

Medway megaliths, Archaeological site in Kent, England.

The Medway megaliths are seven Neolithic burial chambers built from sarsen stones throughout the River Medway valley in Kent. They consist of massive stones fitted together to form underground or partly underground chambers, with some topped by large capstones.

These structures were built between 4000 and 3000 BCE during the early farming period in Britain. They represent a unique concentration of prehistoric monuments in eastern England and mark the shift from hunter-gatherer to settled agricultural life.

These monuments show how early farming communities honored their dead through shared burial spaces. The way the stones are arranged reveals beliefs about the afterlife and community identity.

The megaliths are spread across the valley and can be reached through footpaths, though some sites are more accessible than others. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven and the areas around the stones can be muddy or grassy.

Each of these monuments has its own identity and was built at slightly different times over many centuries. Walking through the valley, visitors encounter not just stones but the remains of multiple generations who built and rebuilt these sacred spaces.
