Malton Priory, Religious complex in Old Malton, United Kingdom
Malton Priory is a religious complex in Old Malton featuring Norman architectural elements including sturdy stone walls and rounded arches. The remaining sections showcase the characteristic Romanesque construction style of the period.
The priory was founded in 1101 by Eustace fitz John and served as a monastery until the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII in 1539. Following this event, it was repurposed as a parish church.
The church interior preserves 35 misericords, with eight retaining original medieval wood carvings from the 15th century. These carved seats with animal motifs reflect the religious art tradition of their time.
The building sits on Town Street in Old Malton and remains an active place of worship with regular services. Visitors should wear comfortable footwear since the ground and churchyard surfaces can be uneven in places.
Three medieval stone coffin rests lean against the rear churchyard wall, relics from a time when burials were handled differently. A stone shelf for supporting coffins also remains built into the boundary wall, showing how the space was once used.
