Broch of Burrian, Iron Age broch in North Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands, Scotland.
The Broch of Burrian is an Iron Age stone tower standing on a small headland beside a rocky shoreline in North Ronaldsay. The structure features thick circular walls with a central chamber and remains surrounded by defensive earthworks on its landward side.
This broch was occupied during the Iron Age across two distinct periods, with excavations revealing numerous artifacts from that era. Later finds including a cross-carved stone and an iron bell point to Christian activity at the site.
Discoveries of a cross-slab with ogham inscriptions and an iron bell suggest early Christian activity occurred at this archaeological site.
The tower stands on exposed terrain near the coast, so visitors should prepare for changing weather and uneven ground. Care should be taken when entering the ruin as some sections are unstable.
Four concentric ramparts form the outer defenses on the landward side, making this broch a substantial example of Iron Age fortification.
