Seaton Carew lighthouse, 19th-century lighthouse in Hartlepool, England
Seaton Carew lighthouse is a cylindrical stone structure standing near Hartlepool Marina with a height of about 19 meters. Its interior features a spiral staircase lit by narrow vertical windows that run through the full height of the building.
The lighthouse was built in 1838 by the Tees Navigation Company to help ships navigate the River Tees during a period of growing commercial trade. It was moved to its present location in 1995 and repurposed as a memorial to local sailors.
The lighthouse reflects the maritime roots of this coastal region and how deeply shipping shaped local identity. Today it stands as a visible reminder of the town's connection to the sea and trade.
The lighthouse is located right at the marina edge, making it easy to spot while exploring Hartlepool's waterfront. The area around it is flat and accessible, particularly pleasant to walk around during calm weather.
This structure was originally one half of a pair of navigation lights that worked together to guide ships into port. Its companion beacon no longer stands, making this the sole survivor of what was once a matched set.
