Heugh Lighthouse, Navigation lighthouse at The Headland, Hartlepool, England.
Heugh Lighthouse is a white steel tower standing 16 meters tall on The Headland in Hartlepool. It sends navigation signals to guide ships approaching the North Sea coast.
The original sandstone tower was built in 1847 and survived German attacks in 1914 before being dismantled in 1915. The current steel structure was erected in 1927 to replace the earlier building.
The lighthouse is woven into Hartlepool's maritime identity and shows how the town developed around its port. You can see this connection reflected in the structure that still guides ships today.
The lighthouse is automated and operated by PD Ports, so it functions continuously without constant staffing. Its location on The Headland offers good visibility from both the water and surrounding areas.
The steel design of the current structure allows for rapid dismantling during wartime, a feature born from the experience of the earlier tower's removal. This practical construction reflects how defense needs shaped the engineering.
