Fort Gross Fredericksburg

Fort Gross Fredericksburg is a stone fortification standing on elevated ground that overlooks the Gulf of Guinea from the Princes Town coastline. The structure features thick defensive walls and historical cannons positioned to protect the trading operations that once took place along this shore.

Prussian merchants established this trading post between 1683 and 1684 to secure their foothold on the Gold Coast. The site subsequently fell under local control and changed hands multiple times during the 1700s as regional powers shifted.

The fort's name reflects the Prussian kingdom that once conducted trade here, and its structure remains a symbol of Ghana's colonial past. Walking through the grounds today, you can sense how this place connects to the broader history of the West African coast.

The site welcomes visitors during daylight hours and accommodates only a small number of people at a time. Wear comfortable shoes since exploring the grounds involves navigating stairs and uneven surfaces throughout the structure.
