Castlebar Barracks, Military barracks in Castlebar, Ireland
Castlebar Barracks is a three-story military installation at Rock Square with original features, though it has been modified several times. The building stands on the grounds of a former castle.
The barracks was built in 1834 and housed the 3rd Battalion of the Connaught Rangers until it disbanded in 1901. After closure in 2012, Mayo County Council took over the property.
The site reflects the area's military past, though civilian uses like schooling became part of its story over time. The buildings show how spaces changed their purpose across different periods.
The site is accessible to the public, though some areas are used by Defence Forces reserve units. Check ahead to learn which parts you can visit.
A human skull was found inside a ceiling in block A during renovation work in 2016. The discovery raises questions about what happened on the site before the barracks were built.
