Turlough Abbey, Medieval monastery in County Mayo, Ireland
The monastic complex includes a round tower measuring 23 meters in height, featuring a rounded-headed doorway and four square-headed windows at its summit.
The monastery, established in 441 by Saint Patrick, remained active until 1635 when King Charles I dissolved it and transferred ownership to the Fitzgerald family.
The eighteenth-century cruciform church incorporates multiple crucifixion plaques, including one from 1625 that exhibits Counter-Reformation design elements.
The Office of Public Works maintains the monastery grounds, making them accessible for visitors who want to examine the medieval religious architecture.
The site contains a distinctive tomb dated 1786 belonging to George Robert FitzGerald, along with three round-headed windows in the chancel area.
