Moore Hall, Country house in County Mayo, Ireland
Moore Hall is a three-story country house in County Mayo positioned on Muckloon Hill above Lough Carra lake. The building contains 35 rooms arranged in symmetrical fashion and sits within a forest park of about 80 acres with walking paths throughout the grounds.
The house was built between 1792 and 1796 by wine merchant George Moore and remained occupied until 1910. It was destroyed during the Irish Civil War in 1923.
The house draws visitors interested in Irish literature and history, though today the focus is on exploring the grounds and understanding how the estate once shaped cultural life in the region.
Visitors can walk the forest paths that wind through the grounds and pass areas where wild orchids grow among other plant life. The terrain is accessible to those of varying mobility levels.
During the Great Famine of 1846, owner George Henry Moore used his horse racing winnings to provide food for all tenants on the estate. This action set the family apart from many other landlords during that crisis.
