Wellington Fountain, Victorian fountain in Fort district, Mumbai, India.
The Wellington Fountain is a mid-19th century monument in Mumbai's Fort district. The structure features an octagonal basin roughly 11 meters across, supported by a cylindrical column and surrounded by six steps.
The fountain was built in 1865 to commemorate British military leader Arthur Wellesley's visits to India in 1801 and 1804. Eight relief sculptures on the structure depict scenes from his military campaigns.
The fountain is part of Mumbai's Victorian architectural ensemble, which has been protected by UNESCO since 2018. It reflects the building styles that developed during British rule in the city.
The fountain is located at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Chowk and serves as a helpful reference point in the area. It is easily accessible and sits near well-known landmarks such as Regal Cinema and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum.
During a 2017 restoration, workers discovered that the fountain's original water system still functioned after more than 150 years of use. This reveals the skilled craftsmanship and durability built into the original design.
