Pataini temple, Religious temple in Unchehara, India.
Pataini temple is a Jain shrine in Unchehara with a compact structure and flat stone roof in the Gupta style. The central sanctuary houses a four-armed goddess statue accompanied by two male figures, all surrounded by multiple carved figures throughout the interior.
This sanctuary dates from the 5th century and was discovered in 1873 by Alexander Cunningham, who also found inscriptions from the 10th century. Those earlier records contained names of deities that were worshipped at the site.
The temple walls display detailed carvings of Jain Tirthankaras in lotus positions, with figures of spiritual leaders carved at the outer doorway. These sculptures reflect the devotional practices and beliefs that have been honored at this site for centuries.
The sanctuary is located north of Unchehara along a main road connecting both places and is open to visitors. The site is relatively easy to reach and requires no special arrangements to visit.
The central figure is a four-armed goddess, a depiction style rarely seen in early Jain temples. This unusual iconography makes the sanctuary stand out among other sites of that period.
