Clock Tower of Haridwar

The Clock Tower of Haridwar is a freestanding structure on Malviya Island with four clock faces on its sides. The base features a marble platform shaped like a boat, positioned to overlook the sacred rituals at Har ki Pauri.

Raja Baldev Das Birla, an Indian industrialist, built this tower in 1938 when personal timepieces were still rare in the region. The structure came into being as a practical time-keeping landmark during a period of major economic changes across India.

The tower displays red and gold murals showing scenes from Hindu mythology that blend spiritual meaning with the physical structure. These painted artworks shape how the space looks and feels when you visit.

The tower sits on an island accessible by walking or crossing bridges and is best explored in the evening when light is good. The platform around it provides clear sightlines to the river ceremonies and tends to be less crowded than other nearby areas.

The platform around the tower serves as both a viewing spot and a gathering space for large events, regularly hosting crowds of visitors during major celebrations. This dual purpose shows how the structure has become woven into how people experience the river and its ceremonies.
