Caldora Castle, Renaissance castle in Vasto, Italy
Caldora Castle is a fortified residence in Vasto with three cylindrical towers positioned at its corners and situated on a promontory overlooking the Adriatic coastline. The building comprises four interconnected structures arranged around a square courtyard and originally featured a drawbridge and defensive walls.
The castle was built in 1439 as one of the region's major defensive structures of that era. Its construction applied advanced military engineering of the time to protect the coastal settlement and surrounding lands.
The castle demonstrates how noble families shaped the coastal town through their control of the landscape and its resources. Its form reflects a time when fortified strongholds were essential to maintain power over the surrounding territory.
The castle stands in the historic town center and can be seen from several nearby squares and streets. Since it remains a private residence, visitors cannot enter the building but can view and photograph it from the exterior.
The fortress was originally surrounded by a moat that worked together with the drawbridge to form a sophisticated defense system. These water defenses were costly to maintain and eventually abandoned, yet their traces remain visible in the building's layout today.
