Giusso Castle is a medieval fortress in Vico Equense, set on a rocky spur above the Sorrento Peninsula coastline. The stone structure has towers and thick walls, and its terraces open onto wide views of the sea and surrounding hills.
The castle was founded in the 13th century by the Angevins as a defensive stronghold to protect the coastline and the town around it. Over the following centuries it was reshaped by several rulers, including the Aragonese, who made notable changes to its structure.
For several centuries, the castle served as the residence of the bishops of Vico Equense, giving it both a religious and civic role in the town. Traces of this ecclesiastical past are visible in some of the interior spaces and decorative details.
The castle sits in the heart of Vico Equense and can be reached on foot from the town center, though the final stretch involves a steep climb. Sturdy shoes are a good idea since paths and stairs inside the site can be uneven.
A cathedral was built inside the castle walls in the 14th century, creating an unusual combination of military and religious functions within a single complex. The cathedral, dedicated to Saints Cyr and Julitta, is still visible today as part of the site.
