Spirito Santo

The Spirito Santo church stands in central Castellammare di Stabia and features a semicircular staircase of twelve steps leading to its entrance. The vestibule contains a replica of the Massabielle grotto, creating a small devotional space inside.

This church was built between the late 1500s and early 1600s by the Coopers Brotherhood, who buried their members beneath the main altar. The building reflects the close ties between local craftsmen and religious life during that period.

A marble plaque displays carved symbols of hammers, baskets, and barrels that reflect the church's connection to coopers who worked in this port town. These craftsmen shaped the space and left traces of their presence throughout the building.

This church serves as a parish headquarters overseeing several local churches in the area, including the Santa Maria di Pozzano basilica. Check opening hours in advance and dress appropriately for entering a working religious space.

The main altar holds a 1772 painting by Giovan Battista Rossi that shows the Holy Spirit descending upon the apostles. This artwork remains a striking focal point for those entering the church.
