Santi Giuseppe e Leopoldo

Santi Giuseppe e Leopoldo is a church in central Cecina featuring Neoclassical design with a single nave, an apse, and a wooden truss roof structure. An electric pipe organ installed in 1958 with 28 registers and a mobile console with two manuals and pedal occupies a prominent place within.

Grand Duke Leopold II commissioned construction in 1851, with Abbot Quirino Bussotti dedicating the building in 1855. Between 1912 and 1915, Monsignor Angelo Gennai oversaw the addition of extra chapels and absides to respond to growing numbers of worshippers.

The interior displays works by painter Vincenzo Lami from Empoli, who created a Crucifixion with a restrained color approach. These artworks define how visitors experience the space when they walk through.

The interior is relatively easy to navigate and offers clear views of the architectural details throughout. A quiet weekday visit works best if you want to look around without distractions.

The building underwent major expansion from 1912 to 1915 as the city grew and worshippers needed more room to gather. This renovation significantly altered the original structure from the 1850s.
