Santa Maria della Pietà

Santa Maria della Pietà is a Renaissance church in Bibbona featuring a Greek cross layout with a central dome supported by a drum with eight windows and six ribs. The facade includes three stone portals with Latin inscriptions on their frames that convey spiritual messages about the sacred nature of the interior.

The church was completed by Vittorio Ghiberti and Ranieri da Tripalle in 1492, marking a turning point in local religious architecture. This construction period coincided with a time when the region was transitioning from medieval to modern design principles.

The interior displays a 14th-century Pietà painting by Florentine artists on the main altar, shown alongside marble furnishings from the 17th century that reflect the community's devotion. These artworks show how local people expressed their faith through fine religious objects.

The church interior is easy to navigate thanks to its clear Greek cross layout and central positioning of the main elements. Visitors can view all major features from the nave without needing to move extensively through the space.

The exterior walls remain unplastered, displaying raw red brick that gives the building an honest and age-appropriate appearance. Two marble plates bearing Bibbona's municipal coat of arms are embedded in the facade, signaling the local connection of this place.
