San Guido

San Guido is a small oratory in Bolgheri with white-painted walls and a curved stone doorway set into its front facade. The structure stands surrounded by tall cypress trees, which form a distinctive backdrop.

The Della Gherardesca family built this oratory in 1703 to honor a family ancestor. This construction reflects a common practice among Tuscan nobility of the period to establish private chapels on their lands.

The name honors Saint Guido, an 11th-century hermit whose life became intertwined with this region. Visitors today experience the quiet, contemplative feeling that makes this spot a place for reflection.

The oratory sits easily accessible from the nearby Variante Aurelia road and can be reached on foot via the cypress-lined paths. Visiting works well whether you arrive by car or by walking, as long as you are prepared for its remote, quiet setting.

Inside sits an 18th-century altar made from white marble and stone with refined craftsmanship on display. This carefully made piece deserves a closer look to appreciate its details and artistic skill.
