Scaligero Castle, Medieval fortress in Sirmione, Italy
The castle features thick defensive walls, a central tower reaching 47 meters in height, and a deep moat filled with water from Lake Garda.
The Della Scala family constructed this fortification in the late 14th century to protect the southern entrance of the Sirmione peninsula from naval attacks.
The museum displays medieval weapons, archaeological findings, and historical documents that detail the military significance of this strategic outpost.
Visitors reach the top of the main tower via 150 steps, accessing multiple levels that showcase different aspects of medieval defensive architecture.
The internal harbor remains intact as the sole surviving example of a 14th-century fortified port structure in Italy.
