The Oasi di Macchiagrande is a nature reserve near Fiumicino covering 280 hectares with multiple connected habitats. The property features coastal dunes, evergreen forests, and a network of water channels running through the landscape.
The area began as an ancient pond called Maccarese and became a protected nature reserve in 1987. A decade later, it was incorporated into the Roman Coastal Reserve in 1996.
The name comes from the dense Mediterranean shrubland that has defined this landscape for centuries. Visitors walking through can experience this characteristic vegetation type firsthand and understand the origins of the place's identity.
Access is through marked entrances and the grounds can be explored on foot with sturdy shoes recommended. Visitors should bring water and sun protection since shaded areas are limited.
