Isola Sacra Necropolis

The Isola Sacra necropolis is an ancient burial ground containing over 200 funerary structures arranged along an old Roman road with square chambers topped by barrel vaults. The brick facades display inscriptions dedicated to residents of this port city that flourished during the Roman empire.

The necropolis began to develop in the early second century when Emperor Trajan created an artificial island to enhance port operations and commercial activity. The site remained in active use for several centuries and reflects changing burial practices throughout the Roman imperial period.

The tomb inscriptions reveal details about middle-class residents such as merchants, artisans, and freed slaves who lived in this port community. These personal records show how ordinary people identified themselves and valued their place in society.

The necropolis sits near the harbor area and can be explored on foot via paved pathways with informational signs at key locations. Comfortable shoes are recommended since you will want to pause and read the inscriptions on individual tombs to fully appreciate the stories they tell.

Many tombs display personal dedications and final wishes left by the deceased, revealing how people thought about life after death. These messages, often addressed to family or friends, provide a rare personal window into ancient relationships and values.
