Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo is the central square of Pesaro, defined by four main buildings: the Post Office, Ducal Palace, Baviera Palace, and Municipal Palace that form a balanced architectural composition. The space is organized around a central fountain and surrounded by shops, cafes, and restaurants in the adjoining streets.

The square has roots in Roman times, when it served as the forum of Pisaurum and marked the intersection of the city's main streets. During World War II, the original fountain was destroyed, but it was later reconstructed based on a 17th-century design.

The square is where locals naturally gather to spend time, meet friends, and participate in the city's festivals and markets throughout the year. It serves as the heart of everyday social life, where residents pass through daily and celebrate important moments together.

The square is easily walkable and well-connected by public transportation, with stops located nearby. The best time to explore is early morning or late afternoon, when it is less crowded and the light is more pleasant.

Beneath the square lie the remains of the original Roman streets that reflect the structure of the ancient city. Some of these underground traces have been exposed during archaeological work, revealing how the city was organized two thousand years ago.
