Rocca aldobrandesca

Rocca aldobrandesca is a medieval fortress positioned at the island's highest point with a trapezoidal stone structure spanning multiple levels. A semicircular watchtower is built into the defensive walls, offering views across the water and surrounding landscape.

The fortress was built in the 10th century as an outpost for the abbey of Tre Fontane in Rome. The Aldobrandeschi family took control in the 12th century and gave it their name.

The Santa Barbara chapel sits within the fortress walls and was built in 1762 to serve residents and soldiers. It reflects how religious practice was woven into the daily life of this fortified community.

Access requires climbing steep stone steps and walking through narrow village paths, so sturdy shoes are essential. Visits happen in guided groups, and the climb to the fortress demands some endurance, especially in warm weather.

After Italian unification, the fortress was repurposed as a prison, completely changing its role from military defense to incarceration. Today it functions as a residential complex, yet portions remain accessible to visitors showing this unexpected transformation.
