Castle of Campiglia Marittima

The castle of Campiglia Marittima is a medieval fortress perched atop a hilltop and equipped with a defensive wall system and towers. From this vantage point, views extend across the region toward Elba Island, providing a comprehensive overview of the surrounding landscape.

The medieval complex dates to the 10th century, when it served as a residence for the Della Gherardesca family who controlled the region at that time. Ownership and function changed hands repeatedly afterward, though the structure retained its defensive role across the centuries.

The fortress displays architectural elements spanning different periods, including limestone arches and 72 heraldic emblems from 1406. These decorations tell the story of the ruling families who shaped the structure over the centuries.

Visitors can explore the archaeological remains through guided tours that explain the metal-working history from ancient times through the 20th century. Wear sturdy footwear since the climb is steep and the ground is uneven in places.

The archaeological site was rediscovered during excavations in the 1990s and offers insights into the Etruscan and Roman past of the area. These findings reveal that the hilltop was already inhabited as an important location before the medieval period.
