Castle of Ceppaloni

The Castle of Ceppaloni is a fortress situated on a rocky ridge overlooking the Sabato River valley, with preserved stone walls and several towers. The structure naturally follows the shape of the terrain and incorporates the cliff face into its defensive system.

The fortress first appeared in written records during the 12th century and served as a base for Pope Honorius II during conflicts between the papacy and the Normans. The structure continued to develop over subsequent centuries as different rulers reinforced and modified it.

The fortress displays construction marks from three different periods, visible in the masonry techniques and tower designs. Each era left its own imprint on how the structure was built and reinforced.

Access to the site must be arranged in advance with the local tourist office, as management primarily offers guided visits. The location on the rocky ridge means the approach can be steep, and sturdy footwear is advisable.

The walls follow the cliff contours so precisely that the boundary between natural rock and cut stone sometimes blurs. This merging of landscape and structure becomes particularly clear when viewing the site from different angles.
