Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore

The Church of the Holy Savior is a church building in central Benevento with three naves separated by two rows of ancient Roman columns made of gray granite. These columns create a balanced interior that shows how the church reused Roman building elements during its reconstruction.

The church originated as a place of worship in medieval times and suffered severe damage from an earthquake in 1688. Cardinal Orsini led the reconstruction and reconsecrated it in 1696, modernizing the structure with new architectural elements.

The church is dedicated to the Holy Savior and has served as an important sanctuary for the community of Benevento for centuries. Visitors can see in the simple interior how believers have used this space and what it means to the religious life of the city.

The church is easy to reach from central Benevento since it is located on Via Stefano Borgia. After earthquake damage in 1962, it underwent extensive restoration completed in 2001, so visitors will find the building in good condition.

The restoration completed in 1999 deliberately preserved visible traces of historical changes on the walls and structures. This choice allows visitors to observe how the building's architecture evolved across the centuries.
