Chiesa di Sant'Agostino, Medieval church in Trescene district, Benevento, Italy.
Sant'Agostino is a former church in Benevento's Trescene district, featuring a simple rectangular nave ending in an apse. The interior is marked by a decorative main altar displaying a historical painting of the saint washing Christ's feet.
The church was built around 1300 on land that once held a Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Isis. It later became a monastery church and played a role in Benevento's religious life until its closure in the 1800s.
The church was once home to an Augustinian community of monks known for their work in theology and philosophy. The name honors Saint Augustine, whose image remains depicted in the main altar artwork.
The building now functions as part of the University of Sannio campus and is not freely accessible to the public. Contact the university in advance if you wish to arrange a visit to see its interior.
The monastery oversaw a network of four other churches throughout the city, including Sant'Andrea da Palofernis and San Matteo. This arrangement reveals how influential and organized the Augustinian community was in Benevento's religious life.
