Museum of Sannio

The Museum of Sannio uses a former monastic building and spreads across multiple connected exhibition spaces. The rooms hold objects from pre-Christian times, classical periods, and the medieval era from this region.

The institution began its collection in the 19th century at a different location and then moved into the church building, where it has been housed since. This happened when the provincial administration took over the structure and made it available for exhibition.

The name Santa Sofia refers to Byzantine architecture that inspired this church, and the rooms show how different cultures layered on top of each other. Visitors can see directly how Samnites, Romans, and Lombards shaped the region in succession.

The building is easy to locate and consists of multiple connected areas that you can explore with a single ticket. It is advisable to allow enough time, as the collection is large and spread across the space.

An unexpected treasure here is the finely crafted objects from a temple built by a Roman emperor for an eastern deity. These rare items show how deeply eastern religions took root in this Italian city.
