Chiesa di San Domenico

The Chiesa di San Domenico is a Baroque church in Benevento with a classical Latin cross layout whose interior features marble columns, ornate wall surfaces, and decorative stucco work throughout. The chapels and altar area display the characteristic furnishings typical of religious architecture from this period.

The church was established in 1233 after a jurist named Roffredo Epifanio acquired the Santa Maria Antiqua monastery and handed it over to the Dominican order. The building was expanded over the centuries and received its present Baroque form during later renovation phases.

The name refers to Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican order, and visitors can see valuable altar paintings and wooden sculptures that reflect the artistic tradition of this sacred space.

The church is located near the University of Sannio rectorate building and is easily reached on foot from the city center. Visitors should check opening times before arriving, as access can be limited during religious services or special events.

Attached to the church is a garden containing the Hortus Conclusus, an art installation by contemporary artist Mimmo Paladino. This unexpected work merges modern artistic practice with the traditional character of the religious site in an unusual way.
