Sanctuary Madonna di Mongiovino, Catholic shrine in Tavernelle, Italy.
The Sanctuary Madonna di Mongiovino is a church in Tavernelle featuring a large dome supported by four pillars and vaulted ceilings throughout. Two ornate entrance doors in mannerist style mark the main access points to the interior.
Construction began in 1728 under architect Rocco di Tommaso da Vicenza, who designed it following mannerist principles. The bell tower was added in 1775 to complete the complex.
The name comes from a reported vision of Mary on Mount Mongiovino that has drawn pilgrims for centuries. The four chapels inside reflect how different forms of prayer and devotion find their place here.
The sanctuary functions as an active parish church welcoming visitors and pilgrims year-round. Check opening times ahead of your visit, as the space may be closed during religious services or private events.
Beneath the church floor lies an ancient family crypt holding sarcophagi of the della Penna and Borgia-Sulpizi noble families. This underground burial chamber reveals how the sanctuary became a resting place for the region's prominent families over time.
