Castello di Montalera

Castello di Montalera is a hexagonal castle in Panicale with a perimeter wall of around 300 meters and towers reaching about 10 meters high. The fortification contains defensive features, a tower structure at its core, and a planted courtyard at the center.

The castle was built in the 12th century and later changed hands several times. In 1393 it came under the control of Biordo Michelotti as payment for military services.

The chapel shows neoclassical features standing beside medieval walls, making different building periods visible at a glance. Walking through the courtyard, you can see how these style layers shaped the structure over time.

The castle sits on a hilltop at about 350 meters elevation and offers open views of Lake Trasimeno from this position. The elevated location makes it easy to reach and provides sweeping views across the surrounding landscape.

Inside the courtyard sits a romantic garden with six bordered flowerbeds and old trees. This hidden green space is arranged with traditional citrus vessels and forms a quiet contrast to the fortress-like exterior.
