Idesuna Jima Range, Military shooting range in Tonaki, Japan.
Idesuna Jima Range is a military shooting range occupying a small uninhabited island west of Tonaki, in the Okinawa archipelago of Japan. The island has a hilly terrain with a peak of about 32 meters and is used entirely as a training ground.
Before its military use, the island was home to a human community, as pottery found during archaeological surveys shows. That earlier settlement disappeared well before the island was turned into a training facility.
The range operates under dual Japanese and American oversight, reflecting the military partnership between both nations in the Pacific region.
The range is only accessible to authorized military personnel and is not open to the public. Anyone seeking information about the area should contact the relevant authorities directly.
The entire island serves as a single shooting facility, with no part of it reserved for any other use. This makes it one of the rare cases where a whole island is given over entirely to a military purpose.
