Akechidaira Ropeway, Aerial tramway in Nikko, Japan
Akechidaira Ropeway is an aerial tramway in Nikko that carries visitors up the mountainside to reach an observation point. The journey takes you over forested slopes to a platform where you can view the surrounding landscape from above.
The ropeway began operation in 1933 and was then substantially renovated before reopening to the public in 1950. This renewal allowed it to serve visitors for many decades afterward.
The ropeway provides access to an observation deck where visitors observe Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and Mount Nantai, three important natural landmarks.
The ropeway is open during the warmer months and operates during daytime hours only. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a jacket, as it is noticeably cooler at the top than at the base.
The system maintains an operating speed of 2.5 meters per second across a maximum gradient of 30 degrees through the mountainous terrain.
