Nikko Botanical Garden

Nikko Botanical Garden is a botanical facility in a mountain region of Japan with natural streams and ponds throughout. The grounds spread across rolling terrain at higher elevation and house diverse plant collections organized in different sections.

The garden was founded in the early 1900s and soon moved to its current mountain location. It was later expanded and has served as a center for plant research in the region ever since.

The garden serves as a place where the relationship between people and plants from mountain regions comes to life. Visitors can see how local alpine flora is tended and displayed, especially in areas with specialized collections from across Asia.

The garden is best explored on foot, as paths wind through the terrain and you should allow time for different sections. Sturdy shoes are helpful, especially when the ground is wet or on slopes.

The garden houses a specialized collection of high-altitude plants displayed in carefully designed rock gardens. These settings showcase flora from the highest regions of Asia that is otherwise difficult to observe.
