The Kirifuri Highland extends across grasslands and forests, offering views of Mount Fuji, Tokyo Skytree, and the Pacific Ocean from its observation points.
The highland area developed into a recreational destination during the 20th century, connecting to Mount Nyoho, one of Nikko's sacred mountains for religious practices.
The name Kirifuri translates to 'rising fog' in Japanese, referring to the mist patterns that form over the adjacent Kirifuri waterfalls throughout the year.
Visitors can access the highland via a 25-minute bus ride from Nikko Station, with services operating regularly between April and November from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
A 1,445-step stairway called Tenku Kairo leads visitors through the highland, covering an elevation gain of 250 meters across one kilometer of terrain.
