Kirifuri Highland

Kirifuri Highland is a mountain plateau at about 1200 meters elevation featuring grasslands interspersed with forest areas. The landscape includes observation points where visitors can look out over the surrounding terrain and distant views on clear days.

The highland became a recreational destination during the 20th century as Nikko developed as a tourism area. This growth connected the plateau to the broader landscape of sacred mountains that held religious importance for the region.

The name Kirifuri refers to the rising mist that forms naturally over the landscape, creating an atmosphere that local visitors have observed and named for centuries. Walking through the highland in early morning hours, you can see how this fog shapes the way people experience and relate to the place.

The best time to visit is from April through November when conditions are most favorable. Visitors should prepare for changing weather, especially in the higher areas where temperatures can drop quickly.

A notable feature is a long stairway that climbs through the highland, gaining significant elevation across a considerable walking distance. This route makes the ascent a challenging experience for visitors who attempt to cover the entire course.
