Gorōyama kofun, Decorated kofun in Harada, Chikushino, Japan
Gorōyama kofun is a circular burial mound in Chikushino standing about 6 meters tall with a diameter of roughly 35 meters. Inside sits a multi-chamber stone structure about 11 meters long, with walls decorated with painted scenes.
The burial mound was discovered in 1947 and its chamber was excavated the following year. It was designated a National Historic Site of Japan in 1949.
The stone chamber walls feature painted murals showing everyday life with people, boats, horses, and birds in action. These images tell stories about how people lived and what they valued during this period.
An adjacent museum displays replica murals and offers an observation area to examine the burial mound's interior. Walking paths around the site provide access to view the monument from different angles.
Excavations uncovered valuable artifacts including gold rings, beads, and swords dating from around 550-600 CE. These precious objects reveal the wealth and high status of the person buried here.
