Fukuyama City Zoo, Public zoo in Fukuyama, Japan.
Fukuyama City Zoo is a public zoo located in the northern part of Fukuyama, in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. It houses a range of animals including elephants, giraffes, and penguins, kept in open enclosures spread across hilly grounds.
The zoo was founded in 1978 by the Fukuyama Tourism Convention Association, with the aim of bringing wildlife education to the local population. Over the following decades, it grew to add new species and updated enclosures.
The zoo is a regular destination for school groups and families from Fukuyama and the surrounding area. Some sections allow children to get close to smaller animals, making it a hands-on experience for younger visitors.
The zoo is in the northern part of the city and is easiest to reach by bus or car. A visit usually takes several hours, so comfortable shoes and water are a good idea, especially on warm days.
On certain summer evenings, the zoo extends its opening hours so visitors can watch nocturnal animals when they are most active. This makes for a noticeably different experience compared to a daytime visit, as many animals that rest during the day become lively after dark.
