Fukuju Kaikan

Fukuju Kaikan is a historic house in Fukuyama that blends Japanese architectural elements with Western influences. The property features a tea room, a Western wing with Renaissance-style decoration, conference rooms on the upper floor, and a ground-level coffee shop overlooking the garden.

The house was built in 1930 as a villa and belonged to Wasuke Anbe, who made his fortune in dried bonito flake production. After World War II, it was occupied and used by American forces.

The main building in Japanese style hosts traditional events such as tea ceremonies and musical instrument demonstrations. Visitors can also experience exhibitions featuring kimonos and tea utensils.

The building has conference rooms on the second floor available for rent and a coffee shop on the ground level. Access is straightforward, and the garden provides a quiet place to linger.

Before being transformed into a villa in the 1930s, the site was a rice storage warehouse that served the nearby Fukuyama Castle. This transformation marked a notable conversion from a functional storage building into an elegant residence.
