Shōsenkyō, Canyon in Kofu, Japan

Shōsenkyō is a granite canyon along the Arakawa River where tall rock walls and water-carved formations create a striking landscape. The formations stretch across several kilometers and display different types of stone shapes created by the river's flow over time.

The canyon received official recognition in 1923 when the Japanese government designated it as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty. This status marked the start of modern protection efforts for the area.

The river gorge and its rock walls have long inspired local painters and poets to create works on display around the canyon. The visual drama of the formations continues to influence how people experience and appreciate the landscape today.

A ropeway system allows visitors to reach viewpoints throughout the valley with ease. The best time to visit is during seasonal changes when the landscape transforms in color and light.

Hundreds of rock formations have been given local names, including one resembling a monkey face gazing at the river. These named stone figures create a kind of natural narrative that gives visitors landmarks to notice while exploring.
