Anijima, Uninhabited island in Ogasawara Village, Japan.
Anijima is an uninhabited island in Ogasawara Village located about 800 meters from Chichijima and covering roughly 7.87 square kilometers. The island has rocky terrain and reaches 254 meters at its highest point, Mount Mirakaeriyama.
In 1888, two settlers attempted to inhabit the island but abandoned the effort due to rocky terrain and lack of freshwater sources. The military later took control of the island during the Taisho period.
The island is part of the Ogasawara archipelago, representing a world shaped by its remote island setting far from the mainland. Visitors encounter untouched nature that helps scientists study natural processes rarely seen elsewhere.
Access to the island is only by boat from Chichijima, and visitors must obtain permits before traveling. Strict environmental protection rules must be followed during your visit to protect the natural habitats.
The island is home to over ten species of land snails long thought to be extinct. These rare snails survived because the island remained largely untouched by invasive species.
