Fukutoku-Okanoba

The underwater volcano Fukutoku-Okanoba lies 25 meters beneath the Pacific Ocean surface, 5 kilometers north of South Iwo Jima island.

During August 2021, the volcano produced one of Japan's largest eruptions since 1868, creating a massive plume that reached 16 kilometers into the atmosphere.

Japanese scientists regularly monitor this submarine formation through satellite technology and specialized equipment to protect maritime navigation and fishing activities.

The Tokyo Volcanic Ash Advisory Center issues safety notifications when eruptions occur, as volcanic materials can affect aircraft operations and maritime traffic.

The 2021 eruption generated floating pumice rafts that traveled 1,300 kilometers to the Ryukyu Islands, impacting local marine ecosystems and vessel operations.
