Fukutoku-Okanoba, Submarine volcano near Iwo Jima, Japan

Fukutoku-Okanoba is a submarine volcano located approximately 25 meters beneath the Pacific Ocean surface, roughly 5 kilometers north of South Iwo Jima island. The formation remains under constant observation due to its occasional volcanic activity.

In August 2021, the volcano produced one of Japan's largest eruptions since 1868, sending a plume high into the atmosphere. This eruption marked a significant geological event in the region.

Japanese scientists regularly monitor this submarine formation using satellite technology and specialized equipment to protect maritime navigation and fishing activities. The ongoing observation reflects a commitment to safety across the region.

Monitoring this volcano is important for ships and aircraft, as eruptions can affect traffic in the area. The Tokyo Volcanic Ash Advisory Center issues safety notifications when activity occurs.

The 2021 eruption created floating pumice rafts that drifted thousands of kilometers across the Pacific Ocean. These rafts formed an unexpected connection between volcanic activity and marine life distribution.
