Anejima, Remote island in Ogasawara Village, Japan

Anejima is an uninhabited island in the Ogasawara archipelago and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It features varied landscapes with dense forests, hills, and coastal areas that support many species found nowhere else in the world.

People settled on this island from 1894 to 1944, raising pigs and goats for livelihood. The inhabitants left during World War II and the island has remained unpopulated since then.

The island retains evidence of past settlements through remaining structures and pathways, reflecting the historical patterns of human interaction with nature.

Visiting this island is difficult because no regular boat services operate to this protected nature reserve. Any trip requires special permission and arrangements with local authorities.

No one has lived on this island since 1944, allowing nature to fully reclaim the land. This undisturbed state makes it valuable for scientific study and conservation efforts.
