Myōman-ji, Buddhist temple in Iwakura, Kyoto, Japan.

Myōman-ji is a Buddhist temple near Iwakura with traditional wooden structures and a large stupa decorated with 486 Buddha statues on its outer walls. The grounds contain multiple buildings and landscaped areas that together form a substantial temple complex with walking paths and open spaces.

The temple was founded in 1383 by Buddhist leader Nichiju and underwent multiple reconstructions following fires and conflicts during the Muromachi and Edo periods. These rebuilding phases shaped the complex as it appears today.

The Snow Garden within the grounds reflects traditional Japanese garden design, with carefully arranged stones and plants that create spaces for quiet reflection. Visitors walk through a layout shaped by centuries of horticultural practice that remains part of daily temple life.

The temple is accessible from early morning until late afternoon, allowing visitors time to explore during daylight hours. The walking paths on the grounds are easy to navigate, with several spots to sit and rest along the way.

The grounds house a historic bell tied to a local legend, while thousands of azalea plants color the entrance gate in spring and early summer. This blend of historical artifact and seasonal natural display makes timing a visit thoughtfully worthwhile.
